The Great Exhibition of 1851 increased British interest in the continental system of decimal currency and metric weights and measures. The system was widely favoured in Britain and at the time an agitation for its introduction led parliament to appoint a Select Committee in 1852 and a Royal Commission in 1857 to examine the subject. The minutes of evidence and reports of these bodies are contained in the present set.
